High Summer in Ely
Given that it is warm and humid today, I have to admit spring is over and summer is here. There is so much going on in Ely that it is impossible to mention all of it. In addition to all the outdoor activities of hiking, fishing, canoeing, biking, swimming and just relaxing by a lovely lake, there is much more to enjoy.
Tuesday evening every week is the Farmer's Market at Whiteside Park with craft and food vendors, live music and food trucks. There is also outdoor live music at other locations including Brainstorm Bakery and Mealey's Tiki Deck. Summer indoor entertainment includes high quality musicals and dance performances presented by Northern Lakes Arts Association, first run movies at the Historic State Theatre, and a wide variety of great classes at the Ely Folk School.
For food you have so many choices from fine dining, great burgers, fast food, food trucks and our new hot dog cart. There is pretty much something for everyone's food wishes. Coffee shops feature roasts from mild to very dark to help you get going in the morning. We have a fine wine bar where you can pick up a light menue to go with a nice wine.
Our downtown is filled with novelty shops featuring locally made art, pottery and clothing. There are several art galleries to visit and a fine expanded book store on the corner of Sheridan and Central. The selection is worth a long visit, with books featuring the local area, natural world, mysteries, new releases and much more.
Don't miss our festivals with the Blueberry Festival in late July, the Harvest Moon Festival in September and the marathon weekend also in September. Bring your bikes and enjoy a long ride on the Mesabi Trail. Our guests have said the trail is beautiful and smooth riding. The International Wolf Center, the Great American Bear Center, the Dorothy Molter Museum and the Mine Museum are all unique experiances. We have new wolf pups at the Wolf Center. Make a reservation to see them.
So much to do, so little summer. Come enjoy some of it in Ely.
